Swirl Expands Portfolio of Indoor Mobile Location Patents

Newest Patent Covers Location Signal Security and Consumer Privacy

Boston, MA– Swirl Networks Inc., the leading Mobile Presence Marketing platform provider, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued the company a patent in the area of indoor mobile location security and privacy. This patent adds to Swirl’s growing IP collection, which includes the company’s previously-granted patent covering the technology and processes for using beacons to trigger the delivery of targeted content to a mobile device based on a user’s location.

The U.S. patent No. 9,715,698 titled “Systems and methods for encrypting location broadcasts,” describes the technology and processes used to secure the data that is broadcast by indoor location signals. By encrypting the digital location signals that originate in their stores, retailers can enable an additional layer of security to protect their data and the privacy of consumers who visit their brick and mortar locations.

As retailers upgrade their store systems and infrastructure, most of the hardware devices they are installing, including beacons, WiFi access points, light fixtures and controllers, payment terminals and digital displays, contain embedded capabilities that allow them to broadcast Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signals. Because these signals can be used to generate highly sensitive shopper behavioral data and trigger valuable mobile marketing interactions and customer service applications, large-scale retailers need to ensure that they are protected from unauthorized use by third parties. Swirl’s Mobile Presence Management platform enables retailers to secure their signal network by using advanced encryption technology and permissioning capabilities to actively manage access rights.

“In the early days of indoor mobile location marketing, retailers didn’t need to be particularly concerned about security, since much of their effort was limited to small-scale pilot programs,” said Hilmi Ozguc, Founder and CEO, Swirl. “Now that digital location signals are available in the hardware devices that have been installed in virtually every major retail store, access control and security will play a much more important role in retailer activation. This patent recognizes the ongoing R&D investments we continue to make in order to drive advances and growth in the indoor mobile location ecosystem.”
